Cocktail Music Review (Pritam)

Heavy voices and Light rock, if mixed well, can be the key ingredients of a Bollywood hit today. And this time in Cocktail, Pritam seems to have kept this well in mind. No, not taking any credit away from him for this wonderful album, just trying to understand how it was made.

Tumhi ho Bandhu – what Pritam is.

With Neeraj Shridhar and a tune that catches you in literally seconds, not minutes, Pritam adds Kavita Seth’s voice to make a perfect cocktail of music in the very first song of the album. One that took the world by the storm, and is not going to go down too soon. It DOES make you tap your feet.

The good part about the song is that the more catchy part of the song – tumhi din chadhe..sakha tumhi – is not all that the song has. The soul of the song comes up with Kavita’s singing and Irshad’s words which seem to express a Meerabai like devotion even in the beach-madness-rock ambiance.

Daaru Desi – regular stuff from Pritam.

A song that would at one time happen to feature KK and can’t-guess-who comes up beautifully in Benny and Shalmali’s voices. After Ishaqzaade, Shalmali’s open voice singing works here too, though the song is not Pareshaan for sure. Good, worth a listen.

Mohan Kanan. Shilpa Rao. A little more Rock. And a good song. Na chhode yaariyan.

Actually people criticize me for being reminded of songs all the time while reviewing. And at times I feel that’s true. But I can’t help thinking of Kar Chalna shuru tu when I listen to Yaariyan. Not like the songs are same. It’s just the Amit Trivedi style processing of the song and the minor similarities in songs make me think of the former. However, Pritam takes a beautiful step in making Mohan sing this one. The depth in his voice is an expression in itself. Lovely that.

Second Hand Jawani. The compulsory single screen collection song.

The song with Meri behen-d jawani, second hand jawani type words. Catchy, Govinda-age music. Singers can be from India or Canada, you know what it is. Important for collection in single screen cinemas.

Tera naam japdi phiraan. Light rock, Heavy voices.

Javed Bashir here has been given a mammoth task. Of making an average song an awesome one. The track is good, and the experiment of using Javed’s voice and Sufi style singing with Nikhil’s full fledged English lyrics and some Barbie-doll style singing by Shefali turns out to be nice. However, this one could be added a unplugged kind version, with just Javed leading the song instead of the remix.

Luttna. Lovely singing. Killer lyrics.

Yep. Taking nothing out of the music, I’d say it’s the superb lyrics that make the song. Anupam Amod’s slow, shayari-ish singing is beautiful here, and the background rock track is just fine. But the overall mix gets heady, if you’re the one for it.

Welcome to India, Arif Lohar.

Heard the name and can’t place it? I bet it’s that one song of Coke Studio that you either didn’t hear much, or heard and just got stuck to. Jugni ji is here in India, in a new cover, but the packaging and the material, though changed, has not been altered too much, mostly keeping the soul of the song there. The lovers of Coke Studio might not like it too much, but Pritam has done some good work here, much of it by not working too much on the song. This one is something to listen to, a must-loop if you haven’t heard the original one. And yes, before I forget, good choice putting Harshdeep here, she is that one part of the song that’s probably better than that in original.

So that was the review that should have came ages ago. But better late than never. Hope you’re loving this Cocktail already.

I am. Music Review.

Amit Trivedi. 3/6. Vivek Philip. 1/6. Rajiv Bhalla. 2/6. And a good album. Onir does it quite well it seems. A review.

The album starts with Amit Trivedi’s Baangur, sung by Mame Khan and Kavita Seth. The song has that typical Amit Trivedi beat in the background but even though the album bears Amit’s signature, it is completely worth listening to. While Mame sounds a bit like Mohan only, Kavita makes things interesting for sure. A good combination of singers and music.

When the second song Isi baat pe starts, for once you may feel it’s the first song going to be repeated, but then in comes probably the first big name of an Amit Trivedi composition, KK. But somehow, since the song has the same background as Bangur, it doesn’t leave so much of an effect. A good song, nonetheless.

The next song Bojhal se, is sung by KK again, but is a composition of Rajiv Bhalla. The song is definitely one for KK though as there is very minimal music in the background and the whole ballad is lifted by KK alone. The lyrics are wonderful and all I want to say is, listen to it when u are at leisure, and you’d love it.

The next, Aankhein, is a Vivek Philip composition, and sounds like one. The song seems to follow the same style composition as in Jalte hain of Sorry Bhai. A soft, romantic, slow, but beat based song that will probably be liked the very first time you listen to it. And then, some really wonderful singing by Karthik. Do try.

In his next song, Saye Saye, Amit Trivedi gets a bit experimental and keeps Rekha Bharadwaj and Mohan singing kind of separately from the background beats. My guess is that the song is gonna be loved much by people in due time. Sounds like a slow addiction to me. Do listen to this one as well.

The last song Wandu yerudu (means one two), composed by Rajiv Bhalla, has some Hindi/Punjabi/Telugu words, in fact for the first half minute, one may think the song is Telugu only, after which Punjabi words start appearing. Not a great composition and definitely nothing like the other songs of the album. Probably an addition to the album for those who wanted a dance number, but I wonder how much it’ll work.

Anyway, overall the album is great and out of the six original tracks, five are definitely worth a listen, while Bangur and Aankhein are something to be loved. And then, Saye Saye can be the big surprise. Lovely album.

Shor in the City: Music Review

Dheere Dheere, jiya ko dheere dheere, apna sa laage hai saibo. Sachin-Jigar are once again here to prove themselves, and this time they use the voices of Shreya Ghoshal and Tochi Raina to prove their point.

The first song of the album called ‘Shor in the City’ is definitely not shor of city. Shreya starts the song in her soft voice with a light Punjabi accent and then Tochi almost adds a new life to it. The variation in terms of instruments is something to watch out for in the song. Wonderful use of Indian instruments in between so many western ones while Sachin-Jigar keep the melody simple. Delighting.

The next song, though, more talks like Shor. Karma is a bitch sung by Suraj Jagan, Priya and Swati is more of an experimental one and gives a feeling of Robot in some places, the way it is arranged. The Hindi rap (karma khula saand) and dera-dam-dam-dam-da are some good parts. With some publicity and a good video, the song may pick up well.

Shor, sung by the strong-voiced but much unkown singer Mohan, is yet another track to be heard. Like all other songs of him, this one again has some inspiring lyrics and even the song is not a ‘naav,’ it’s worth a try. If I say the song reminds me of Indian Ocean, you may be a bit too high on expectations, so I’d leave the comment and just recommend you the song without much specifications.

The next comes Dheem Dheem Tana, which is sung by Shriram Iyer, is yet another ‘different’ song with some Hindi rapping, in some places with Sanskrit tatsam words, the song has some good vocals and arrangements too, but somehow it doesn’t leave much impact. Okay stuff.

The album also has a remix of Saibo and Roop Kumar Rathod’s teri justajoo, Agnee’s Ujale Baaz and Kailasa’s Babam bam babam as bonus tracks.

Overall, Sachin-Jigar and Harpreet’s Shor in the City has some good songs and Dheere Dheere and Shor leave an impact. Do try this one.

Naav – Udaan: Lyrics

Naav or chadhti lehren laangh na paayen is probably the best song of Anurag Kashyap’s next production, Udaan, which has been composed by none other than Amit Trivedi and with lyrics of Amitabh Bhattacharya. The song, sung by Mohan, has a folkish touch and has Amit’s signature rock mood too. And somehow, I agree with my friend Dunkdaft who says the song reminds him of SD Burman too. Anyway, the song has some real good singing with some superb music but it’s the lyrics that I’m loving the most, so here are the lyrics of the song, as best as I could hear them.

Udaan: Music Review (Amit Trivedi)

Amit Trivedi’s next is here. And since this one is him with his old group, that of Anurag Kashyap and others, things get even more interesting. Here is a music review of the album.

The first song of the album is, Aazadiyaan, the one we have been listening to, in the promos pf Udaan already on TV. But then, what we get in the promo is the end of the song, the start of the song comes a typical Amit Trivedi, though the music sounds quite like Jaane yeh kya hua of Karthik calling Karthik in the start. Lyrics of the song are really good and add to the quality of slightly rockish, good song.

Geet mein Dhalte Lafzon mein is sung by Amit and Amitabh, the composer-lyricist duo and sounds fresh. As the trend of the album builds up, one can easily see that the effect of rock can be seen pretty well on the album. Amit Trivedi seems to be having a good time with his signature rockish style of composing with added effects of soft vocals. But then, there is again those lyrics, dhool jami thi aankhon mein, khwaab khile ab laakhon mein, naya kuch naya to zaroor hai, dard ki baatein kal ki hain, aaj mein khushiyaan chhalki hai, jebon mein hum raatein liye ghooma karen, fursat ke ye mauke sabhi chooma karen. Listen to the song for those lyrics. Awesome words.

The next, aankhon ke pardon ke, or the other version of Kahani Khatm hai, is sung by Joi Barua (the Ek hulchul si guy) and Neuman Pinto. Keeps the album going in the same mood.

Mohan is someone big I don’t know. I remember the name from London Dreams where he sang Khanabadosh and this time he sings an even more awesome ‘Naav’, or Chadti Lehren Laangh na paayen. A song with Folk touch and composed by Amit Trivedi (I wonder if that is also becoming a type now) sounded really good to me even when I heard it for the first time. Go for this rock-folk.

Do we have the word Chorus anymore? I wonder the same as I read the names of the singers of Motumaster. Anyway, a masti-piece, sounding like part of college-students’-enjoyment in the context of the movie. Nothing serious here, and that is all that matters in the song.

Next in the album comes Nadi mein Talab hai, sung by Amit, Joi and Neuman, the song reminds one of Ek Hulchul si, with lyrics quite different than the mentioned. As the three sing ek udaan kab talak kaid rahegi, roko na chhod do ise, one is bound to feel the positivity of the lyrics. Good again.

The album ends with a ‘soft’ instrumental which, a bit surprisingly for me, showed no effect of rock and sounded like a heart to heart talk, after which you could let the album end and sleep peacefully. Or start again with Pairon ki bediyaan khwaabon ko baandhen nahi re…

In short, lovable album. Kinda typical stuff by Amit Trivedi, but not a thing I would call repetitive or can be disappointed with. Good music and Awesome lyrics. That makes Udaan. Go, fly.

PS: Finding the best of the song is really difficult, but I guess in terms of music ‘Naav’ is the best.
