Atif Aslam’s debut and Khuda kay Liye director Shoaib Mansoor’s second film. That is BOL for you. Here is a review of the album composed by Shoaib Mansoor, Atif, Sajjad Ali and Sarmad Ghafoor.

The album starts with an expected Atif Aslam song in an unexpectedly easy on ears song, Hona tha Pyaar, one that Atif sings like a singer and not like Atif. Hadiqa Kiyani is a beautiful co-singer here.

The next song, Sajjad Ali’s Din Pareshan Hai, is a beautiful, slightly sad, and quite a bit philosophical nazm. Definitely good.

Hadiqa Kiyani’s solo Dil janiya is the next track and the way she starts singing (somewhat in a Richa Sharma or Jaspinder style, just to get an idea) tells you why she’s so popular in Pakistan. Though I was not equally appreciative of her rap. Lovely song, also tells me about the unknown-to-me usage of Hindi in Pakistan. The word was jitna vi soch-’vichar’ kar le, diljaniya.

The next song Saiyan Boliyan has a folk and classical touch and hence is a bit different here. The song credited to Shabnam Majid, Sahir Ali Bugga and Bina Jawad has a really sweet voice singing the main song while the alaaps taken in between give the song something to add. Nice one again.

Ahmed Jahanzeb and Shuja Haider’s Mumkin hai bahaar sounds like an Indipop song by the music, but the singing is a bit more mature comparatively and the combination is not bad. In fact at times I felt like I was listening to a song by Neeraj Shridhar, though a bit slow paced one. Good it is.

The next song Kaho (Aaj Bol do) is again sung by Atif and Hadiqa and this one is more like a typical ‘Atif Aslam’ song. A more raw, high on notes, bit noisy number that should work like the title song for the movie.

The next comes a movie version of Sajjad’s Din pareshan hai. This one, though quite an original number, sounds somewhat like SEL-Kailash Kher’s Ya rabba in arrangements. But my guess is that the number sounds better than the first version, or probably it’s more familiar now.

The last track is Baqir Abbas’s Bol background music. This was the only thing in the album that tested my patience and I was not able to go without skipping some parts. At seven minutes the music is a bit too long.

Overall though, the album is really good with most of the song between good and better than good. The good part is that it’s not an all in all Atif and since the name attached is Shoaib Mansoor’s, I wonder if the movie will be good too. Anyway for now, try this one. I don’t think you’d be disappointed.

The album starts with a typical Atif song, Leja tu mujhe. Sachin Jigar create another likable but so-usual number for Atif and he sings it regularly. You can have a feel of Prince here, but I’d say the song is better than an average song of Prince. Still, you miss nothing if you don’t listen to it.

When you listen to the lyrics of Chaar baj gaye, for once you feel that the song is a try to make another Amplifier, but then there are certain differences and Hard Kaur is a bit different from what she does in every second album nowadays. The song is okay in composition but the mixture of composition, lyrics and vocals should be enough to make the song a party thing, that, if it reaches enough people.

In the next, Rab sab se sona, Sachin-Jigar do a full Pritam and make Neeraj Shridhar do a song that is typical him. The song, a relatively slow composition, works simply for its arrangements that completely go with Neeraj’s voice.

The next song, awaaz, is sung by one of the composer duo, Jigar. And while the lyrics of the album seem to stand out from the first two lines, very soon one may find similarities to A R Rahman and Sohail Sen’s patriotic compositions (latter from KHJJS). Still, the song is not too similar to any song and sounds like a good one with some fine lyrics and some likable music as well. Do try this one.

With Mika and a song named Fully Faltu, the album takes a one eighty turn and comes to a completely I-will-make-you-hum-this-at-any-cost song. Yes, aaltu-jalaltu part of the song is a bit catchy, very easy, and highly repeated so that one’s mind is almost pressurised to place it somewhere. Nothing too great, but with the tactics and promos, it should work.

Vijay Prakash and Priya Panchal come next with Gale laga le, another compositions with slight Rahman effects. I suppose this is no coincidence that the composers have come up with one of Rahman’s favorite singers. But beyond Vijay, I liked the voice of Priya who seemed to sing something like Shilpa Rao and somehow Alyssa Mendonça too. Though I liked the song, I don’t think the song offers a lot more than awaaz.

Nayee Subah is sung again by Jigar, but this time it’s something like Ale (Golmaal 3). I wonder how I’m able to find everything in the album similar to something else, but this is what I feel with every song I hear in the album.

Anyway, while the penultimate song, O Teri, sung by Jigar again, is more about seen and unseen Obscenities, Neuman Pinto’s Percentage somehow sounds somewhat like Ten on ten, but on a completely different topic. While the lyrics of the song had a huge scope of being better, the overall song somehow manages to sound okay.

Overall, in terms of music, F.A.L.T.U. does not literally characterizes its name, but is not on the opposite end either. While for a comedy songs are not too bad, in certain place there is a lot to be done. While there is not much new, songs like char baj gaye and awaaz are worth a try.

If there is one person who seems to be getting it big with Prince It’s Showtime, it’s composer Sachin Gupta. The guy has mostly got lesser known and comparatively low budget movies before this but this time the ehsaan itna sa kar de guy has got none other than Atif Aslam to sing half the songs of his huge soundtrack of 16, many of them remixes.

Prince starts with it’s already on TV song O mere khuda which has some traces of Race in the starting music. Of course, to clear that it’s the next venture of superhit Abbas-Mustan. And from here on Atif takes you on a fast track of beats. The song goes on a fixed rhythm which sets itself into your mind within one listening. And end of the day, like it or not, you’re humming the song.

The next song starts as Shreya Ghoshal is found trying to maintain all the sweetness of her voice even at that super pace while crooning jaagi jaagi soyi na main saari raat, tere liye, bheegi bheegi palken meri udaas, tere liye… while suddenly Atif comes in with his ooo.. and we are on another track of beats. This time with some more music than the first song and not just one mindless beat. Interestingly, after Atif’s one round, all the sweetness of Shreya’s voice goes and as she tries to sing in a ‘sexy’ voice. By the way, the song doesn’t use Atif’s USP as he doesn’t go to his high mode in the song. I guess the song could be better with some other singer. May be that is the reason there is an unplugged version of the song which is sung by Sachin Gupta himself, at least according to the credits given on the album cover.

If you are looking for any lyrics in Prince, here we are. Frankly, after all two days of listening to the album, this is my favorite song. Kaun hoon main kiski mujhe talaash is not the beat-run to start with. The song has some lyrics that may be liked. But still, while the lines Behke behke se pal chhin hain hosh mein bhi madhoshi hai, mujhko sunai deti hai ye kaisi khamoshi hai, Sachin almost makes the song rock, unnecessary according to me. I liked the music more in the beginning of the song. Still, overall the song is certainly worth listening to.

Aa bhi ja Sanam starts in style as Atif comes up first with a small alaap at his usual high. Sachin’s composition, which is the one used in O mere Khuda, is definitely good and this time isn’t just high speed beats but has some melody too. The good thing about Aa bhi ja sanam is that it doesn’t keep on the same tune and provides improvisations. But then this one is pretty small while compared to O mere Khuda, clearly this one is just for showing composer and singer’s talent. The remix of the song is more Atif’ish as there is more repetitions of the high-voiced aalap.

The next song, Jiyara Jiyara, sung by Alisha Chinoy is catchy and Alisha sings it well. Her voice has been added effects to but she still sounds good. Hard Kaur sounds quite like she did in main tera dhadkan teri of APKGK. But the song anyway will find it’s place on FM stations and maybe in chartbusters too. The bhangra mix isn’t bad either.

Ishq mein teri diwani ho gayi sung by Monali Thakur is the only song of Prince which has no remix. The song is not a great composition but gives some minor space to Monali to sing and she tries her best to grab the opportunity. Overall an average song which will slowly find it’s place with other songs of the album. Still, the song is not going to touch her last superhit with Abbas-Mustan, Zara zara touch me.

Besides the songs, there are a number of remixes in the album and we have a Prince Megamix (avoid) and a Prince Theme (Race-Prince theme it could have been) too. Not much worth telling and too much to blabber about. So I will stop here only.

Overall, most of the songs of Prince – It’s Showtime are fast paced, sound good and should work well enough for the movie. Be it aa bhi ja sanam, o mere khuda, Tere liye, kaun hoon main or even Alisha and Hard Kaur’s Jiyara Jiyara. Go for the album if you’re into fast, techno, beat based music. And yes, it’s gonna be a hit.

Yesterday’s Atif show at Palace Grounds Bangalore wasn’t what I had expected from it to be. Neither there was good arrangement nor a show by Atif with standards I had expected. After this show, I’d say that Atif is a huge, but still quite a raw talent.

The show, called Tu Jaane Na, had to start at 7 and 7:20 I reached there with 3 of my friends, two girls among them. The first problem was that my friends were searching rest rooms and there were none available for people with Rs 850 tickets. The lowest one, that is. That is something I have never faced in any concerts anywhere. We were unable to use a restroom even after trying to talk to at least 5-6 people in various teams making arrangements for the show.

Anyway, after a wait of almost an hour Atif was there, in white T-shirt and a brown hat. The guy started singing Bakhuda tum hi ho of Kismat Konnection and got a huge applause. He made a few improvisations in the song and tried more melody, which was likable. Then he went on to sing meri humjoliyaan kuch yahan kuch wahan, ehsaas (main ek fard hoon), Mahi ve, Tera Hone Laga hoon, Doorie, Meri Kahani, Kinara, Parandey, wo lamhe, mahiya ve soniya ve, kuch is tarah, mera piya ghar aaya, allah hu, tere bin, hum kis gali ja rahe hain, pehli nazar mein, sajna tere bina, tu jaane na, Aadat, mostly the Jal band version of it and some more. Besides his own and Jal songs, songs also included some popular numbers of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and probably some of Abida Parveen too. He added lines from Ae Zindagi Gale Laga le while singing ehsaas and sang some lines of Gulabi aankhen too. Expectedly, that was loved by all.

But most of the people didn’t enjoy the show much, probably because Atif sang more as an amateur than an established singer. You must have been to the concerts and have seen instances when the singer stops singing and puts the mic towards the audiences. But Atif did this all the time and sang almost half of what he was supposed to sing, doing too much of it. Another problem was that the songs were very much improvised and there was hardly any song that Atif sang as it was in the movie/album. There were some great notes that you had never heard but much of the improvisation didn’t help the songs too. So it was something like a great band with a superb lead singer doing its rehearsals but even there you would expect him to sing it all.

To put it best, Atif’s show was like a poet’s cupboard where you got some wonderful pieces of art, but then, most of it is scattered so much that someone with high patience only can enjoy it.

Still, there was food and energy drink Cloud 9 available for free that made people (or at least my friends) feel less bad about their money. Also, at the end, there was a drama when Atif left the stage and then the hosting RJ shouted his name and he came back for some repeat performances. The best thing about the drama, though, was that I could go ahead and watch him from quite near the stage.
