Nadi mein talab hai, Kahin jo agar
Samandar kahan door hai
Damakti garaz hai, sone mein agar
To jalna bhi manzoor hai

Ik udaan kab talak yoon kaid rahegi
Roko na chhod do isse
Ik udaan hi sapno ko zindagi degi
Sapno se jod do isse

Purani daleelon, rasmon ko sabhi
Abhi se kahe alvida
Badalte dinon ke tareekon se
Seenchein hum naya gulistan
Ik udaan kab talak yoon kaid rahegi
Roko na chhod do isse
Ik udaan hi sapno ko zindagi degi
Sapno se jod do isse

Ik udaan kab talak yoon kaid rahegi
Roko na chod do isse
Ik udaan hi sapno ko zindagi degi
Sapno se jod do isse

One of the most inspiring songs of Udaan is Geet mein dhalte lafzon mein, sung by composer-lyricist duo Amit-Amitabh. The song is simply some awesome poetry of Amitabh Bhattacharya and you can feel the zest in almost every line of the song. Be it a hardcore ‘haan ye umangon se phoola hua seena, lamha ye maanga nahi ise humne chheena hai,’ or a more Gulzar-ish ‘jebon mein hum raatein liye ghooma karen‘, the song never goes down a bit in enthusiasm.

So here are the lyrics of the full of life song, with all my wishes to Amitabh Bhattacharya and even Amit Trivedi.

Geet mein dhalte lafzon mein
Taal pe chalti nabzon mein
Naya kuchh naya to zaroor hai
Shaam se leke sehron mein
Dhoop jadi duphero mein
Naya kuchh naya to zaroor hai

Kya baat hai jo baat hai taaza lage
Zindagi ki nayi nayi faza lage o..

Haan yeh umango se phoola hua seena hai
Lamha yeh maanga nahi, isse humne chheena hai
Yunhi jeena hai

Dhool jami thi aankhon mein
Khwab khile ab lakhon mein
Naya kuch naya to zaroor hai
Dard ki baatein kal ki hain
Aaj mein khushiyan chhalki hain
Naya kuch naya to zaroor Hai
Jebon mein hum raatein liye ghooma karen
Fursat ke yeh mauke sabhi jhooma karen

Haan yeh umango se phoola hua seena hai
Lamha yeh maanga nahi, ise humne chheena hai
Yunhi jeena hai

Hatheli mein hai, nayi garmiyan
Junoon sakht hai, gayi narmiyan
Hai dilchasp yeh, aag si, aaaag si
Mitenge nahi, yaad se, yaaaad se

Geet mein dhalte lafzon mein
Taal pe chalti nabzon mein
Naya kuchh naya to zaroor hai
Shaam se leke sehron mein
Dhoop jadi duphero mein
Naya kuchh naya to zaroor hai

Kya baat hai jo baat hai taaza lage
Zindagi ki nayi nayi faza lage

Haan yeh umango se foola hua seena hai
Lamha yeh maanga nahi, isse humne cheena hai
Yunhi jeena hai

Naav or chadhti lehren laangh na paayen is probably the best song of Anurag Kashyap’s next production, Udaan, which has been composed by none other than Amit Trivedi and with lyrics of Amitabh Bhattacharya. The song, sung by Mohan, has a folkish touch and has Amit’s signature rock mood too. And somehow, I agree with my friend Dunkdaft who says the song reminds him of SD Burman too. Anyway, the song has some real good singing with some superb music but it’s the lyrics that I’m loving the most, so here are the lyrics of the song, as best as I could hear them.

chadhti lehren laangh na paayen kyun haanpti si naav hai teri naav hai teri
tinka tinka jod ke saanse kyun haanpti si naav hai teri naav hai teri
ulti behti dhaar hai bairi dhaar hai bairi
ulti behti dhaar hai bairi dhaar hai bairi
ke ab kuch kar ja re panthi..

jigar juta kya baat baandh le hai baat thehri jaan pe teri jaan pe teri
Haiya Ho Ki Taan Saath Le Jo Baat Tehri Jaan Pe Teri Shaan Pe Teri

Chal Jeet Jeet Lehra Parcham tu laal Phehra Ja
Ab Kar Ja Tu Ya Mar Ja Karle Taiyari
Udja Banke Dhoop Ka Panchi chura ke gehri chhaon Andheri Chaao Andheri
Tinka Tinka Joodle Saase Kyun Haanphti Si Naav Hai Teri

Rakh Dega JhakJhor ke tujhe
Tufano Ka Ghor Hai Dera Ghor Hai Dera
Bhanwar Se dar Jo Haar Maan Le
Kaheka Phir Jor Hai Tera Jor Hai Tera

Hai Dil Mei Roshni Tere
Tu Cheer Daal Sab Ghere
Lehron Ki Gardan Kas Ke
Daal Phande Re

Ki Dariyan Bole waaha Re Panthi
Saar Ankhon Pe Naav Hai Teri Naav Hai Teri
Chadti Lehren Laangh Na Paaye
Kyun Hanpti Si Naav Hai Teri Naav Hai Teri

Ulti Behti Dhaar Hai Bairi Dhaar Hai Bairi
Ulti Behti Dhaar Hai Bairi Dhaar Hai Bairi
Ke Ab Kuch Kar Ja Re panthi..

Update: Full meaning of the song is Here.

Amit Trivedi’s next is here. And since this one is him with his old group, that of Anurag Kashyap and others, things get even more interesting. Here is a music review of the album.

The first song of the album is, Aazadiyaan, the one we have been listening to, in the promos pf Udaan already on TV. But then, what we get in the promo is the end of the song, the start of the song comes a typical Amit Trivedi, though the music sounds quite like Jaane yeh kya hua of Karthik calling Karthik in the start. Lyrics of the song are really good and add to the quality of slightly rockish, good song.

Geet mein Dhalte Lafzon mein is sung by Amit and Amitabh, the composer-lyricist duo and sounds fresh. As the trend of the album builds up, one can easily see that the effect of rock can be seen pretty well on the album. Amit Trivedi seems to be having a good time with his signature rockish style of composing with added effects of soft vocals. But then, there is again those lyrics, dhool jami thi aankhon mein, khwaab khile ab laakhon mein, naya kuch naya to zaroor hai, dard ki baatein kal ki hain, aaj mein khushiyaan chhalki hai, jebon mein hum raatein liye ghooma karen, fursat ke ye mauke sabhi chooma karen. Listen to the song for those lyrics. Awesome words.

The next, aankhon ke pardon ke, or the other version of Kahani Khatm hai, is sung by Joi Barua (the Ek hulchul si guy) and Neuman Pinto. Keeps the album going in the same mood.

Mohan is someone big I don’t know. I remember the name from London Dreams where he sang Khanabadosh and this time he sings an even more awesome ‘Naav’, or Chadti Lehren Laangh na paayen. A song with Folk touch and composed by Amit Trivedi (I wonder if that is also becoming a type now) sounded really good to me even when I heard it for the first time. Go for this rock-folk.

Do we have the word Chorus anymore? I wonder the same as I read the names of the singers of Motumaster. Anyway, a masti-piece, sounding like part of college-students’-enjoyment in the context of the movie. Nothing serious here, and that is all that matters in the song.

Next in the album comes Nadi mein Talab hai, sung by Amit, Joi and Neuman, the song reminds one of Ek Hulchul si, with lyrics quite different than the mentioned. As the three sing ek udaan kab talak kaid rahegi, roko na chhod do ise, one is bound to feel the positivity of the lyrics. Good again.

The album ends with a ‘soft’ instrumental which, a bit surprisingly for me, showed no effect of rock and sounded like a heart to heart talk, after which you could let the album end and sleep peacefully. Or start again with Pairon ki bediyaan khwaabon ko baandhen nahi re…

In short, lovable album. Kinda typical stuff by Amit Trivedi, but not a thing I would call repetitive or can be disappointed with. Good music and Awesome lyrics. That makes Udaan. Go, fly.

PS: Finding the best of the song is really difficult, but I guess in terms of music ‘Naav’ is the best.

I’ve been loving the dialogs and the song preview of Udaan. Amit Trivedi gives some good music again and Amitabh Bhattacharya’s lyrics are awesome. And then, the dialogs…

Here are the lyrics that I got from the theatrical trailer, read them, listen to them, love them.

kahani khatm hai, ya shuruaat hone ko hai
subah nayi hai ye, ya phir raat hone ko hai
aane wala waqt dega panaahen
ya phir se milenge doraahe

and an awesome end to the trailer with.. sach bhool gaye hain joote kahan utaare the, par lagta hai ab unki zaroorat nahi..

Haathon ki rekha isse rulayen, kisi rubber se mit na paayen
Life kuch bhi deti nahin hai, badle mein leti hi rahi hai
Such a panauti, such a panauti, duniya mein kahin dekha hi nahin
He’s such a loser, He’s such a loser (o yeah)

Amit Trivedi’s next. Oops! That must be big. But as I start listening to the album, I get a bit disappointed, because the poply popping Aasmaan ke paar chalo doesn’t sound all that good for the first time, and certainly not that Amit Trivedi’ish (Read Dev.D’ish). But after listening to the song quite a few times, one is bound to bounce on the beats of this number. It’s not a Trive.D song and does take some time to be liked. Some.

Dariya Ubale. Starts. Oops. That sounds like Dev.D. Yes, it’s the same guy. O what a voice.

OK. Enough of Drama. Dariya Ubale is a straight from Dev.D track. Not that fast but quite ‘different’ and likeable. Slow but strong beats with a mad voice. Good job Mr Pinto n Mr Bhattacharya.

Meri Rooh. OMG! Rahman’s man singing for Amit. It must be something. Well, it is something. Naresh Iyer sings the melodious tune of Amit ever so smoothly while Aditi Singh Sharma croons in the background. The tune is good but the arrangement with the soft singing is the key. Good one indeed.

Music hi hai (or music hi haaye) is an conversation based song where a mom n son are talking. Kavita Seth n Kavish Seth imitate the situation lively enough to make the listener feel the situation. Lyrics also deserve credit for that while Amit Trivedi’s music is simple n apt.

The last song of the album is Roshni sung by Shruti Pathak. The song is again a typical Amit Trivedi number where an instrument (saxophone?) accompanies Shruti’s voice. Background settings give you a feel like Paayaliya n the same singer may take you back to the Dev.D song once again. Good one again.

Overall, Admission Open is not huge, and has touches of Dev.D visible in places. But Amit Trivedi has come up with fresh compositions like Music hi hai n Meri Rooh and Dariya Ubale and Roshni sound good even with an old touch. So certainly a good album, likeable and maybe even lovable unless you’re expecting too much.

Housefull’s music is not great. It’s what it is supposed to be – Total Time Pass and Entertaining. Like it, love it, use it, throw it. Well, almost.

The album starts with O girl you’re mine, which starts with a tune that used to run in silent comedies once. The song, as you must have heard on TV or Youtube or in your neighbourhood or office, is a catchy piece and O girl you’re mine is so tongue sticking that you can’t help it. Uff Teri Adaa craze Alyssa is there but there is hardly anything for singers in the song and anyone would do equally good. Well, almost. Again.

The next one, papa jag jayega, might have been a bit more long lasting but the lyrics of the song are almost crappy (should I say movie oriented?) and the song doesn’t really click at least on an stand alone listening, though Neeraj’s husky voice suits the song and the lyrics Papa jag jaayega well and he sings ‘not bad’.

Aapka kya hoga? Janaabe-aali?? Yeah, it’s the same song with an added Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy touch, which doesn’t sound bad, and Mika flavor which interestingly, surprisingly, sounds Good. Overall, the Dhanno song has quite some additions in between the old Lawaris song but more or less it’s a new version of the old song. Still, the way Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Mika sound, the song may well ROCK dance floors. Purists may choose to keep distance.

I don’t know what to do is something NEW because it brings up so OLD to us. Think of Sunidhi Chauhan singing like Shamshad Begum (hope most of you know her) and Shabbir Kumar cloning Mohammad Rafi in a duet. That makes Housefull’s I don’t know what to do. Did I hear Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy say “aaja tujhe heaven dikhayenge”?

Loser sung by Amitabh Bhattacharya and Vivienne Pocha is a bit different. Though deep down in my heart I felt the song was somehow inspired by Dev.D soundtrack (‘Inspired’ is Not ‘Copied’ here), I’m not gonna say that openly. According to me the song, somewhere near rap (though it’s certainly not rap) by my limited knowledge of genres, will take it’s own time but good chances people will love it in the end. The song is going to be good in the movie is doubtless.

Disappointing thing about the album, though, is that the remixes are hardly worth anything and Oh Girl and Papa Jag Jayega both have very normal (read boring) remixes. The only one I liked to some extent was the remix of I don’t know what to do, known as Shabbir’s sexy ’70s remix.

Overall, Housefull is an album made for entertainment and to a large extent, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have been successful in doing what they seem to be trying to do. For now, my pick is O girl while for later I am relying on Loser too. A listening of ‘I don’t know what to do’ is highly recommended. What to do later is your wish.

Sometimes simple is beautiful. Someone Somewhere’s Main jis se mila hoon/main jis se juda hoon is one such song. When I saw Amitabh Bhattacharya’s name in the credits, I thought there would be something good, but the first song disappointed me. Still, the second song, main jisse juda hoon, as it has been written in the album, caught my attention as I found myself listening to Raman Mahadevan’s rendering in repeat mode. Later, the song appears in two more versions, both sung by Rajiv Chamba.

The song starts with Raman’s open throat ho ho ho ho, and he starts singing main jisse mila hoon, juda ho na jaaoon in a way that sounds somewhere between Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu, though copying neither. The good thing about the song is that it has some simple but good poetry and Raman sings the poetry loud and clear. Loud and clear here means the instruments in the song are a level below Raman’s voice and you get all the words in the first listening, something I would like to appreciate.

The second version, sung by Rajiv Chamba, didn’t sound so good to me when I was listening to it on the phone but as of now I’m liking it equally, or maybe a bit more, but I’d still vote for Raman’s version as I fell for the song due to that version only. Also, there is a third version, again sung by Rajiv. The version is a bit different from the other two in terms of background music and has more pronounced beats that makes it sound like a remix. The song also has some rap in the foreground too, while the song’s original music is in the background here. In fact Rajiv sounds better in this version.

Here are the lyrics of the song (based on version 1)

main jis se mila hoon, juda ho na jaaun,
main jisse juda hoon, wahan kho na jaaun
main hoon kashmakash mein, kadam ruk gaye hain, wo dekho zameen ja rahi
ye kin raaston pe, ye kin manzilon mein, meri zindagi ja rahi..

wo guzre hue pal, wo guzre hue kal, wo guzra hua waqt guzra nahi hai,
jo pehle jali thi, jo pehle bujhi thi, wo ek aag bujhke bujhi bhi nahi hai,
main hoon kashmakash mein, ki ye aag kya hai, jo phir se jali ja rahi,
ye kin raaston pe, ye kin manzilon mein, meri zindagi ja rahi..

main jis se mila hoon, juda ho na jaaun,
main jisse juda hoon, wahan kho na jaaun
main hoon kashmakash mein, kadam ruk gaye hain, wo dekho zameen ja rahi
ye kin raaston pe, ye kin manzilon mein, meri zindagi ja rahi..

wo yaadon ke jhonke, wo waadon ke jhonke, ye khwabon ke toofan takra rahe hain,
ye kya ho raha hai, ye kyun ho raha hai, jo seene mein armaan takra rahe hain,
main hoon kashmakash mein, ye dil ya nadi hai, jo yoon hi bahi ja rahi,
ye kin raaston pe, ye kin manzilon mein, meri zindagi ja rahi..

main jis se mila hoon, juda ho na jaaun,
main jisse juda hoon, wahan kho na jaaun
main hoon kashmakash mein, kadam ruk gaye hain, wo dekho zameen ja rahi
ye kin raaston pe, ye kin manzilon mein, meri zindagi ja rahi…

No. This is not a poll/vote/awards or any fight like that. Here I am simply sharing some good words of the year 2009 that I found appealing due to various reasons. It can be a line, a mukhda, an antara, a complete song, or a complete album. So here comes my list. Don’t worry about numbers. They’re just for time pass.

1. Aarambh hai prachand: This list could hardly have a better start. I still remember that from the Gulaal promo during Dev.D, I had taken only these words home. I love the entire song, but the first line, Aarambh hai prachand gives the song the start it deserves. And then, there was Duniya, composed, sung, written by Piyush Mishra. Ye Duniya agar mil bhi jaye to kya hai was probably the best tribute Sahir could have. Through the genius of Piyush Mishra.

2. Sapno se bhare Naina: Believe it or not, I consider them one of the best lines composed by Javed Akhtar ever. When you start with Chhoo le ise sagar jise har koi maane, you think it’s good. The next line Paani hai wo ya ret hai ye kaun jaane, even better, wow. Superb. And then, the next two lines beat them, Jaise ki din se rain alag hain, sukh hai alag aur chain alag hai and I thought that was the climax, until I heard par jo ye dekhe wo nain alag hain, chain to hai apna sukh hain paraye. The giant wave has passed from over my head. No matter what Shankar Mahadevan sings now. I am mesmerized. Drenched in those words.

The good part is that Luck By Chance had wonderful lyrics throughout the album. Other than Sapno se bhare naina, there was Ye zindagi bhi which was good (chhoone hain taare ise), baawre (watch Hritik dancing in the circus and meanwhile they tell you the story of entire film industry), and O raahi re, a typical ‘best of Javed Akhtar’ thing.

3. Kaminey: Now that I have talked about Javed Akhtar, I want to talk about Gulzar and so comes Kaminey. Movie, and the track. Vishal Bharadwaj’s music and voice with Gulzar’s lyrics. Something must be there, I thought. And it was. Jiska bhi chehra chheela, andar se aur nikla, maasoom sa kabootar naacha to more nikla. Also, it took sometime to digest, but I loved the lines of Fatak: Ye ishq nahi aasan, aji aids ka khatra hai, patwar pehen jaana, ye aag ka dariya hai. Superb, for sure. Though I won’t say it’s Gulzar material. And then, there was one line in Raat ke dhai baje that I loved, just a line: Ek hi lat suljhane mein, saari raat guzari hai, chand ki gathri sar pe le li, aapne kaisi zehmat ki hai. Yes, that is typical Gulzar.

4. Kurbaan hua: It came well near the end of the year, but I am breaking the rough chronology here not only because I loved the lyrics of the song, but also because it makes my most commented post. The song, Kurbaan hua, definitely had some great music and Vishal Dadlani sang it wonderfully, but the words of Niranjan Iyengar are certainly good. While the song has some great lines like Jal uthe meri kufr se saanso ka ye sama, the interesting thing is that the song gives a summary of almost entire movie. Use of Urdu words is almost perfect, in a way that they are used to make things crisp.

5. Emosanal Attyachar: Tauba tera jalwa, tauba tera pyaar, tera emosanal attyachar. Words so casual that you rarely think they mean anything until you sing them for yourself, which happens quite commonly with me. Emosanal Attyachar is something so common, especially in India that it starts right from the family and keep going with friends, girlfriends and even at work. The words were so interesting that they almost replaced the phrase ‘emotional blackmail’ in the dictionary of Urban youth. Awesome lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya.

Talking about more words of Dev.D, there are a lot I like, but the only ones that I’d mention here are kahan chali gayi hai saali khushi, and Hadd nazar ki jahan talak hai, ik bharam hai, wo jo dhanak hai (ek hulchul si). Good ones.

6. Genda Phool: Whenever I make a list about songs and music, Dev.D is followed by Delhi 6. So why leave it here. Genda Phool is something that was not just awesome on music but had some great singing and good lyrics as well. I mean, be it the antara bush shirt pahine, khaye ke beeda paan or the very starting saas gaari deve devar samjha leve, sasural genda phool, entire song was good. Superb job by Prasoon Joshi.

Rehna tu was great too, though I am still trying to grasp why the so-so-romantic song suddenly went into philosophy with hath tham chalna ho, to dono ke daayein hath sang kaise. It feels like the song suddenly changes a world and goes to glass adha khali from Jaane tu ya jaane na. Strange, but nevertheless good. By the way, one line I had almost forgot to mention is from Delhi 6 title song where the lines go casually: Iske bayein taraf bhi dil hai, iske daayein taraf bhi dil dil hai, and suddenly says ye sheher nahi mehfil hai. One word to make some awesome lyrics.

7. Chor Bazari: This song comes ‘up’ in the list because Star Screen recommended it. Else, it would go a bit more down. By the way, if you haven’t got it, the order of songs is based on how much and how badly I want to write about a song and nothing more. Also, one movie, once started, has been finished then and there.

So, talking of Chor Bazari, the song certainly did not deserve a ‘best’ award as there were much better lyrics out there, but the song was good. Firstly, the song was so matter-of-fact, showing what happens with so many urban youths today and secondly, it was all in good spirit and fit the movie so well. Good work by Irshad Kamil.

8. Dhoop ke sikke: This was one underrated song of the year, even though it got some publicity while the movie could not get any. The lines baarood jab bachcha tha wo titli pakadta tha, wo amiya bhi churata tha, patango par jhagadta tha.. are good. But where it comes to magar dhokhe se tumne uska bachpan bhi to loota hai, zara dekho to uski aankhon mein wo kabse rootha hai make it awesome. Great work by Prasoon again.

9. Aye Saaye mere: Oops! Where did this come from? Well, this song of New York (yes, it was there in the album) was composed and sung by Pankaj Awasthi and written by Junaid Wasi. The bad thing about the song turned out to be its music which wasn’t very catching and worse, it got no publicity and no picturization in the movie. I love the lyrics of entire song and the lines mathe pe sabhi ke likh de, hathon pe sabhi ke likh de, zyada na koi na kam ho, ik naam sabhi ka rakh de are kind of hard hitting. The song definitely deserved more according to me.

10. Give me some sunshine: Swanand Kirkire is a genius. Be it Hazaron Khwahishen aisi, Khoya khoya Chand, or even 3 idiots. He makes himself heard. Here he made a song that did wonders, but the bigger wonder was the lines he added to the song, lines so good that Sharman Joshi’s recitation of those lines equals Sonu Nigam’s singing in the movie. Just in case you haven’t got it, I am talking of kandhon ko kitaabon ke bojh ne jhukaya, rishwat dena to khud papa ne sikhaya… and then, beating it with likh likh kar pada haathon par alpha beta gamma ka chhala. concentrated H2SO4 ne poora bachpan jala daala. No words for his words.

At the same time, Jaane Nahi Denge tujhe was superb and Behti hawa sa tha wo was good after I found its relevance in the movie.

11. Jashn hai Jeet ka: Yet another underrated song according to me. This song of London Dreams reminded me of Shakespearean era. The lines Main to akele chal diya Haathon main leke patwaar, Manjhi pe mujhko nahin ab thoda sa bhi aitbar and maine dhakel ke unhe, chheen ke le li roshni, mere hisse ke ye savere, mere hisse ki zindagi were wonderful. Or rather, the entire song was. The song not only puts the entire movie into it, it also made me feel that the movie was somewhat like Julius Caesar, about friends and ambitions, which it actually was. Loved the song.

Also, Khwab ko raag de had good lyrics, but then, it’s quite regular for Prasoon now to give that good lyrics.

Besides these, Dil Ibadat kar raha hai of Tum mile too had some good lyrics. The lines teri yaadon mein rahoon, tere khwabon mein jagoon, mujhe dhoondhe jab koi, teri aankhon mein miloon were wonderful in the song. And while Mann ka Radio had a good message, it lost its seriousness with full-too-attitude. Still, some of the words in the song were new and gave a good feel.

I guess that’s all from me for the year. I hope there are even better words for us to listen to in the new year. With Ishqiya, the start has been good of course.
