Kites: Movie Review

Preview show. Rupees 250. n yes, for those sitting 2 rows behind me, Rs 270. Fame cinemas at Whitefield’s Forum Value Mall had 3 preview shows on Thursday, and all three were housefull. No wonder Fame chose Kites to fly their rates even higher, adding rupees twenty to every ticket.

Worth that much? I guess not.

OK. Kites is a good movie. Doesn’t have that much of story but then Anurag Basu knows how to make a movie and when you have all the money from BIG Pictures and Rakesh Roshan and all the time of a talented actor like Hrithik, he can create magic, and he almost did, as through the entire movie, you know the end, but still, somehow, it keeps you hooked. All points to Anurag for that (But then, he had done it so much better in Metro, though it had a bit more story than Kites).

Other than the story thing, Kites is fabulous. Take any department, acting, music, background score, cinematography, and where it comes, choreography, all of them are awesome. Hrithik and Barbara do share a chemistry and you can watch it on-screen. The small cast, Hrithik, Barbara, Nick Brown (the guy playing the villain), Kabir Bedi, and even Jamaal, the chauffeur played by Yuri Suri are all good. Kangana gets a smaller role than expected though.

The best things about Kites are the music, the background score, the cinematography, and of course, its direction, though I had expected more than this from Anurag after Life in a Metro. He has tried new things (eg, the picturization of Tum Bhi ho wahi) but in a few places it becomes clichéd, maybe because of the story. Salim-Sulaiman have been really wonderful with their background score and I absolutely loved that. Cinematography is good in general and the desert scene looks superb.

I guess there isn’t much more to say though I can keep on going. So I would like to summarize it with a tweet of mine.

Not a great story. But otherwise, almost everything is great. Watch it once I’d say.

  1. Reading reviews all over, it does not satisfy the expectations we had. At last you said- “Watch it once I’d say.” Well, who watches a movie more than once these days? Now, you get varied options at the end of every week so, the impact of movie (no matter how good it is) doesn’t stay for too long. It gets overridden by next release 🙂

  2. bahut jaldi sirji review likh diya…but hamesha ki tarah review great hai, kyoki baki sare review se alag bhi hai aur bina matlab ki story nahi bataya hai tumne…
main aaj 6.45 PM par movie dekhne wala hu but abhi tak jo review dekhe hai wo bahut hi kharab hai..
harshit 2010 ki movie naam bade aur darshan chote type ki kyo aa rahi hai..?
for ex-veer(i like it),my name is khan, housefull and now kites..
    kahi ravan,dabbang,tees mar khaa bhi..?

Ravan ki no guarantee. Though I expect it to be good.
Dabanng is standard Salman Khan material. That cannot be ‘bad’ for fans. Critics like it or not is a different thing.
Tees Maar Khan is going to be total masala. So I don’t know mujhe pasand aayegi ya nahi. I hated OSO, but then I like most Akshay Kumar movies.

But there is something I am expecting the most from – Rajneeti. That should be good.

  4. harshit, maine reviews dekhne ke bad bahut jyada koi expect nahi ki thi Kites se but mujhe movie acchi lagi…to soch raha hu,movie ka review likhne ki galti aaj life me 4th(Yuvvraaj,Wanted & Ld) time kar hi du..
main janta hu tumhare jaisa na likh pau but …
Jab do patang ek sath bahut der tak hawa me udte hai to unme se ek ko kut ke girna padta hai…
if you are fed up by crap bollywood movies???if you want to feel the love.. If you like something hatke then go for kites???
i cant say kites is awesome movie but yes movie is good and has a very beautiful love story, it is not different from other crap bollywood movies but treatment is totally different..movie is very slow in first half…unlike others I like climex..one more thing too much Spanish irritate sometimes..
Hrithik & Barbara are fabulous and their chemistry is just mindblowing, anurag basu direction is also very good..
background music is awesome & song are also good(looking good at screen),Choreography of Fire song is just amazing..
I’m sure Kites will fly in the sky..
    3.5 / 5

  5. Honestly, I didn’t have too many expectations from the movie… Just feel when a movie takes more than three years in the making, it gets stale and over-hyped by the time it eventually comes out… Kites is another such example…

1st half was nice, enjoyable… But, post-inteval, the movie kept losing whatever steam it had… Hrithik was, as usual, brilliant though…

Not worth 300 bucks is my view… and in case of Hrithik, not worth 3 years..!

  6. @Dhruba

u may be right, but then, Metro is not a point in case. Anurag took pretty long with that too, delayed it so many times, but the product was still so good.

But then, as u said, even I didn’t have much expectations from the movie. Somehow.

Waiting for Raajneeti now. Hope it’s good.

  7. Hey Harshit !!!

    Thanks for the wonderful review.

Till now I haven’t heard any positive feedback from anyone who watched this movie and i really wonder … why !!!!!

I watched the movie and truly speaking I liked it .I fully agree with every single review comment you made.

Story is not so good but good work in other apects makes it a special movie. Take the picturization of ” Tum Bhi ho wahi” its different and excellent. Thanks for making a comment on this, which made me to notice this song in movie.

Over all I would say we can’t take it as a typical bollywood movie. Its different and beautiful attempt.

  8. bro i think you need not to follow anyone style…your style is so unique and i think one of the best..
