Suraj Jagan. I had noticed the name for the first time on the cover of Rock On!! He has been singing from even before that but finally Suraj Jagan found the fame he must have been looking for after Give me some Sunshine of 3 Idiots. Finally he is singing for big budget Bollywood films, and interestingly, he is getting number of songs that comes under the rock genre for some time now.

This success hasn’t come his way easily. Suraj Jagan’s first song as per the bio on his website is Dum Laga of Dil Dosti etc., a song I loved for the carefree attitude it talks about. His next song Johnny Gaddar was good again, but later songs did not get much fame and he kept waiting for his time to come and kept singing for movies here and there.

After singing single songs in movies like Bhram, Sunday and Hijack, he got called by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy again for Rock On!!, and sang the only song that had a male voice which was not of Farhan. Zehreelay. Thus he got a chance in a big movie, but not for a song that was sung by the hero.

In 2009, he got the first film which had him as its lead singer, Or precisely, the only singer. Straight. But the movie could not do any wonders. Finally, the end of the year did a wonder for him when he sang Swanand Kirkire’s words in 3 idiots. The result is known to all. Give me some sunshine was not just well received by people, it got more than a million views on Youtube’s various videos for the song. Though, even this time the song wasn’t pictured on the hero, the lyrics of the song had left no need for that.

After Suraj’s super success in 3 Idiots, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have brought him in for their new albums My Name is Khan and Karthik Calling Karthik also.

Suraj has been part of many rock bands during and before his stint in Bollywood. But while most of the songs he is getting till date have some type of rock attached to them, he has sung songs from other genres too, and sung them well. His versatility especially came out in Straight, where he got all the songs to himself. He also has more than a hundred ad jingles to his credit, including the popular Hutch ad ‘You and I.’

I hope he sings more and better songs in future. All the best Suraj Jagan. You certainly Rock! \m/
