Raat Gayi Baat Gayi is a Saurabh Shukla directed, award winning movie from Pritish Nandy Communications, going to release on 31st December. So here is the music review for the last movie of 2009. Music and lyrics, and most of the singing, by Ankur Tewari.
Love in C Major: Some good music and a tried ‘different’ use of instruments, the song seems something like the introductory song of a new pop singer’s debut album, who is most probably going to get lost in the crowd of many. It’s a love song, not bad, reminds me of Papa Kehte hain at some points, just for its guitar.
Bade Sheher ke bade Nakhre: Club. Slow. Tough voice. Less instruments. Good lyrics. Well sung. Good one. Try it if you go beyond typical bollywood songs. The jazz version of the song remains the same with singing. just the instruments go Jazzy. Kind of same.
Mohabbat Bahut hi Mushkil hai: At the end of this song, there is a voice saying ‘Kya Bakwas band hai’, but the song is more interesting than Bakwas. The lyrics are good and the song is sung interestingly by Ankur Tewari. Though the ‘band’ is actually a bit old type, reminding me of Shahrukh’s band in Kabhi haan kabhi naa, it’s not so bad as to throw things over it.
Yaari Teri Yaari: If credits are to be believed, this song, too, is sung by Ankur Tewari alone. Though I find a female voice too which is uncredited.
Anyway, the song is a bit typical and so is the voice of Ankur in the song. An okay, bit boring song. Nothing really great. Wondering where it can be placed in the movie.
Don’t flay love that: All english. Jazzy feel again. Sung by Siddharth Coutto and Gaurav Kapur (VJ). Sounds like Rajat Kapoor. The song is kind of a talk on philosophies of life. Strange for sure.
Kyon: Kyon, sung by Ankur Tewari is good. Though I feel it could be better, the song is surely worth listening to. A slow song where Ankur uses a husky kind of voice and gives lots of pauses, ultimately giving a wonderful feel. Good lyrics. Try the song.
Raat Gayi Baat Gayi: Anushka Manchanda is here again, with a song that may stick to your head. The title song of the album has some good music and at some points gives me a feeling of some old black and white song. The song is good and worth a try. The remix of the song has nothing great though.
Overall, the music of Raat Gayi Baat Gayi is more movie oriented than for CD and cassette sales. Most of the songs are not what sells in Bollywood but the ones that are Bollywood types are not good at all. Listen to the album if you like to experiment. Kyoon and Raat Gayi Baat gayi are recommended. Bade sheher ke bade nakhre and Mohabbat bahut hi mushkil hai are fair too.
Update: The female singer in Yaari teri yaari is June Banerjee. Courtesy Ankur Tewari.
