Today I saw a review by my twit-buddy dunkdaft saying Kurbaan Hua sounds just like Nazara hai of Tasveer 8×10 and is the only ‘glitch’ in the album. Well, my first reaction was of shock. But then I tried to compare the songs and found that the words Nazara hai and Kurbaan hua had quite some similarity even though the words Kurbaan hua lasted longer unlike Nazara hai. So I started searching why Kurbaan hua sounded better than Nazara hai. Here are the reasons I found.

First, Kurbaan hua is not Nazara hai. Even though we have same composers and singers, the composition is more mature and low-pitched notes have a better balance here. Second thing, that was completely missing in Nazara hai is lyrics.Kurbaan hua boasts of some meaningful lyrics while lyrics of Nazara hai hardly have one.

And finally, the best part of Kurbaan hua is its end. From the point Vishal starts rendering marne ka sabab slowly, the song reaches a peak very few songs are able to find. That is the part of the song I wait for every time listen to it. Those are the lines on which.. Kurbaan hua..

Lyrics:

Kurbaan hua teri Tishnagi[1] mein yun kurbaan hua
Teri aashiqui mein yun
Bekhudi mein, bekali
[2] mein, bekasi mein hua
Tujhko har dua di Har daga di Aur fanaa
[3] hua
Kurbaan hua .. Kurbaan hua
Adaa pe, wafaa pe, jafaa pe
Kurbaan hua .. Kurbaan hua

Rubaru tu magar Tanha hai ye jahan hoo vo
Jal uthe meri kufr
[4] se
Saanson ka ye sama hoo vo
Kya hua pal mein jaane kho gaya kyun
Tu mila aur judai maa hua yun
Bekhudi mein, bekali mein, bekasi mein hua
Tujhko har dua di Har daga di Aur fanaa hua
Kurbaan hua .. Kurbaan hua
Adaa pe, wafaa pe, jafaa pe
Kurbaan hua .. Kurbaan hua

Marne ka sabab[5] maangta raha dar badar
Mitne ko to dil pal mein raazi huaaaa…
..Poori hui har aarzoo har dastan meri
Ke tum shuru hue jahan main khatam hua
Kurbaan hua .. Kurbaan hua
Adaa pe, wafaa pe, jafaa pe
Kurbaan hua .. Kurbaan hua

  1. Tishnagi=Thirst
  2. Bekali=Restlessness
  3. Fanaa=Destroyed
  4. Kufr=Blasphemy
  5. Sabab=Reason

I think that there is a little correction in the lyrics. I think it is ‘bekafi or beqafi’ instead of ‘bekasi’. Please check it and it would be very nice of you if u can help me out with the meaning of both these words.
Thanks alot for giving meanings of some of the words as I was searching for the same and found your blog. :)

  2. Harshit says:

Thanks Gaurav. I checked the song again. but it’s Bekasi only. Also since I know the word already, I can be more sure.

The exact meaning of bekasi is Majboori so the meaning of the song is that the guy is restless as he can’t do anything.

If there’s any further clarification, I’d be happy to help if I can.

  3. naina says:

wat is the meaning of the word jafa….in the line ‘wafa pe jafa pe’

  4. Harshit says:

Jafa is something like opposite of Wafaa. The exact meaning of Jafaa is cruelty/injustice. Like ‘sitam’.

  5. saima says:

Please help me with the meaning of kufr…how do we relate it to the line in the song??

  6. saima says:

also i think bekhudi, bekali & bekasi….all have the same meaning as in restless, helpless..is this true???

  7. Harshit says:

    @Saima

Kufr basically means an act against God. But here the meaning is less about God and more about his lover whom he has ditched. So this act of ditching the lover who was to be his god, is called Kufr, or blasphemy as we roughly say it in English.

Regarding Bekhudi, Bekali and Bekasi, you are right. Bekhudi actually is a state of intoxication. When a person is under the effect of some nasha. But here it is used with Bekali and Bekasi like them only.

  11. Shah says:

can u just exolain the last verse… the bst one?
because i kinda am from tamil nadu.. and i cn understand and read hindi, except tha laast verse…
    thanks!

  12. Harshit says:

    would love to do that.
the last verse is kind of apologizing and the guy wants to die after the sins he has committed. since he had ditched his love, he is searching for a reason to die everywhere, n the heart wants to kill itself. (marne ka sabab maangta raha…)
n finally says that by dying, all his wishes and his story are complete, and his love gets a new life. (poori hui har aarzoo har dastan meri, ke tum shuru hue jahan main khatam hua)
I guess that’s the meaning to the best of my knowledge.. :)

    @Tanveer

Jafa is beautiful. n Thanks a lot for getting that corrected. :)

Jafa is one of the many words that I have learnt over the years, and created my own notion about after listening to it in many songs n ghazals. But this time the notion turned out wrong.
